| Susan’s
Mysteries, a series of paintings from Passion
(see Exhibitions), were
originally exhibited in Tudeley Church over Easter, 2004. This church
is famous for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall (1887-1985). Originally
the east window was commissioned by the Goldsmid family as a memorial
to their daughter but at the unveiling Chagall decided to produce windows
for the whole church. The Mysteries were hung
above the altar under the memorial window. The Mysteries were painted in response to the Mystery Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz von Biber (1644 -1704). They were performed by Pavlo Beznosiuk in the Tudeley Festival on Easter Saturday, marking the tercentenary of his death, and Susan’s paintings were exhibited in the church for the concert. In the only existing manuscript each of the fifteen sonatas is prefaced with a biblical reference and an appropriate engraved image. The sonatas are followed by a Passacaglia. The Mystery Sonatas, unpublished in Biber’s lifetime, were unknown and unpublished until the twentieth century. |
